The public is always welcome to attend the Parkland Public School Division meetings to keep abreast of the school board’s policies and decisions.
At each meeting, there’s an opportunity where the public can ask questions or comment on ongoing issues. Delegations will be considered with a two weeks’ notice period.
Apart from the regular board meetings, the education committee meetings are held three times each year to discuss educational delivery in a detailed manner.
Public engagement sessions—usually by invite – are held twice per year. Parents, grandparents and local residents can ask the school board to be invited to these meetings.
The board meetings have agendas that cover policy updates, trustee reports, student presentations, curriculum updates, new provincial mandates, health and wellness updates and recognition of special achievements.
Parkland School Division board consists of seven elected trustees who serve four-year-long terms. Trustees are responsible to operate in the best interest of students and the parent community. They set local educational policies and make the best use of available resources.
Trustees are involved in planning – from educational goals, annual budgets, capital plans and three-year educational plans. They carry out in a manner that meets the division’s broad vision.
Accountability is a big part of their job – to make sure they act in accordance with statutory requirements, monitor, evaluate and report on division’s performance to all concerned stakeholders.
They communicate with the community, support school programs and represent the overall community needs.
Trustees attend monthly school council meeting at each of the division schools to answer any questions and provide reports on the happenings of the school division.
The public can gather information and stay up-to-date by visiting the board website at www.psd70.ab.ca. The website provides reports and an opportunity to learn more about each policy and administrative procedures of the school division.
Some of the upcoming board meetings dates are Nov. 7, Nov. 28, Dec. 12, Jan. 9 and Jan. 23 at the Parkland School Division’s Centre for Education.
A public engagement evening is scheduled on Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. at the Spruce Grove Composite High School.
